Purchase made, Alpinestars Race Replica suit in hand, it was off to the track for a Phillip Island Ride Day, and to give the suit some time on the bike. Now this suit is the same size as my previous Alpinestars suit, the SX1, but the fit is still different, so keep that in mind when making a purchase, all similar sized suits do not all fit the same. In fact, during my 'trying on suits' time, I found I had to go up a size in many brands due to the difference in fitting of the various brands and even models within those brands. But back to the fit, the legs are far more snug fitting than my previous suit, however, the increased area of stretch panel material made the fit better as they just hugged my legs, almost like wearing lycra. The other result of these extra stretch panels in the legs is the amount of movement is massively increased, meaning I can move my legs around as though I have a pair of tracksuit pants on, not a leather racing suit. Likewise in the upper body, with amazing movement allowed by the stretch panels which are strategically placed to allow movement without compromising protection. Excellent!
Protection is also optimal with Alpinstars External plastic shoulder, forearm, and knee protection, CE certified tibia protectors, as well as a ventilated back hump for both aerodynamics as well as spine protection. There is also a soft grip area inside the knee which is perfect for locking on to our TechSpec Tank Grips .
The front of the suit features Ultra vented leather which will be handy on those 40 degree days down at Phillip Island and Broadford, and the stretch panels also provide further ventilation. Inside there is a removable lining which is anti bacterial, and can be easily removed for washing purposes.
The wrist cuffs and collar are made from neoprene (wetsuit) material, for a snug fit which allows again for great movement. Some of the suits I tried on initially were so tight around my neck I found it hard to breathe normally with the suit zipped up fully. I can't emphasise enough the importance of being able to go to a store and try the suit on before making a suit purchase. the internet is great for many things, but getting your 1 piece leather suit size correct is not one of them!
Nicky Hayden, Casey Stoner, Ben Spies, Dani Pedrosa, and many, many more top professionals can't be wrong. Can they?
Since my last set of Alpinstars leather were looking a bit worse for wear after doing their job for me on more than one occasion, I decided it was time for a new suit. Now I doubt that there has ever been a time where riders have had so much choice in 1 piece leathers as they do today. So, what to get was the first decision that had to be made.
I had always loved the fit of my old Alpinestars SX1 suit, and there could be no doubting that it had served me well, being still intact after 3 falls at Phillip Island. But there were so many options to consider.....
So, after spending way too much time on the internet, and in various shops around Melbourne trying suits on, I was left with the knowledge that I should stick with what has worked, and fit well, in the past, Alpinestars! Now I tried the Race Replica suit on at Peter Stevens in Melbourne, and the staff there were very helpful with my not wanting to purchase at the time, but happily accommodated my trying on every suit in the store that might fit. I would highly recommend them, and their range of leathers in store is second to none in Melbourne.
On the bike the suit was outstanding, no rubbing, no pressure points, which I had encountered in other suits, great movement and the ventilation was very noticeable in the early sessions before the day had warmed up.
The Alpinestars Racing Replica suit is available in various colours in Australia, including black, red, blue, white, green and silver and in sizes US46 to 60. At $2799 it is one of the more expensive suits on the market, but worth every penny if fit, comfort and protection are high on your list of priorities in a new suit. It is distributed in Australia by Monza Imports and their dealer network.
